5A Identifying Local Opportunities

  • Trump's first year in office was a huge setback for U.S.-Latin American ties by Andres Oppenheimer
  • http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/1698CFFAEA460198?p=WORLDNEWS
  • This article touches on how President Donald Trump is basically disrespecting the Latin American countries and is not realizing what they have to offer.  President Trump had referred to some of the countries as 'shitholes'.  President Trump declared there is a wall and has already deported several hard working Latin Americans out of the country.  The article also goes over how Trump does not realize that the Americans export three times more to Latin American countries than to China.  The first year with the Trump administration has put a major setback with Latin American countries that is going to be very hard to bring back.
  • The problem: Trump is slowly burning serious bridges with all Latin American countries that can offer the United States if they were to be on good terms.  Nothing good ever comes out of being disrespectful to different countries.  With this continuing to happen the United States is slowly going to see consequences.
  • The people: The people that are becoming involved in this are the Trump administration and the Latin American immigrants that are currently living in the United States.
  • Parties settle lawsuit over TV 'fat shaming' allegation by Jose Lambiet
  • http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/169A1F8C476F84C8?p=WORLDNEWS
  • This article talks about a longtime CBS4 cameraman suing the company for demoting him when he fat shamed star reporter Jim DeFede.  Hassan was sued in federal court on March 23rd for religious, racial, and age discrimination.  The former Florida A&M football player Hassan changed his name from Wilfred Ardley since he had become a Muslim.  Hassan claims he was supposed to protect DeFede's image and did not do so good enough.  Hassan claims that one of his colleagues asked him "What is wrong with your people?" when referring to muslims.
  • The problem: There is a lot of racism all over the world and this is an example of it.  Hassan was racially attacked for not doing his job "good enough" which still is no reason to racially discriminate someone.
  • The people: The people involved are the staff involved at CBS4, including Hassan and DeFede.  Others that could be considered involved are the muslim religion and black community.
  • Alyson Chadwick: Public has lost sight of government's purpose
  • http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/169A212892CCDDC0?p=WORLDNEWS
  • This article is about how a girl from Gainesville was talking to one of her neighbors and her neighbor suggested there be no government and have everyone come together and band together raising money and supporting themselves.  Alyson then went on to explain how that is what a government is and then realized with everything going on with the Trump administration, a lot of people do not look at it like that.  Alyson then went on to explain how there are a lot of people on the Trump administration that are not qualified for their jobs and he is making a lot worse than it really should be.
  • The problem: There are many people who are unhappy with the way the government are handling several situations and the people are trying to think of ways to make it better.
  • The people: The people involved in this scenario is basically the population in the United States.
  • Garage glitch may be costing city dearly by Andrew Caplan
  • http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/169976F5697D8560?p=WORLDNEWS
  • This article is about the garage in Gainesville that is located on 105 SW Third St.  They had discovered a busted payment system that is costing the city of Gainesville hundreds of thousands of dollars.  This is a major issue because if they were bringing in all of the money that they possibly could, they would be able to put it towards a lot to benefit the city.  It was noted that there were employees stealing thousands of dollars along with people making fake passes.  One of the issues for the garage is that there is also nearby free parking.  They plan on fixing the issue and generating more money from the 24 hour parking garage.
  • The problem: People are stealing thousands of dollars from the garage and finding ways around it to not pay.  The deal was never clear as well which leads to the owner thinking that its another way he is losing out on the money of the garage as it continues to decline in revenue.
  • The people: The people involved in this are the owners and the community of Gainesville that are using the garage.
  • LifeSouth says cold weather has hurt blood supplies by Renee Castro
  • http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/169976F5630E03A8?p=WORLDNEWS
  • This article is about the whether storms taking place in Alabama and Georgia causing the states to have a negative impact on blood supply, causing them to cancel their blood drives.  LifeSouth is now calling on Florida to restock its blood supply to help.  It was also noted that because of the cold whether in Florida, their blood supply has also been down.  There will be two places in Gainesville where people will be able to donate their blood.  They are trying to have cities compete for someone to have the title for most blood donors and to get as many people to donate as possible.
  • The problem: There is a shortage of blood supply in Georgia, Alabama, and even Florida due to whether.  This could be putting a lot of people's lives in danger.
  • The people: The people involved in this is the companies responsible for bringing in blood, the people making a difference, and the people who could potentially be put at risk for there being a lack of blood supply.

4A Forming An Opportunity Belief

The belief that I have of an opportunity existing of an unmet need is being able to order food and beverages from your seat at sporting events and concerts at stadium events.  When sitting down at your seat, you will have an iPad attached to the seat in front of you where you can order food however you like it and order beverages however you want them.  You are then able to swipe your card on the iPad to have it paid for and ready to go.  Once the food and beverages are completed being made, they will be brought to you by the staff of the stadium.  As far as I know, there have been attempts in very few stadiums to complete this but it was not done in the correct way.  I also think it would help the stadiums in the long run because if people do not know how long the lines are, they will continue to order drinks and food which would give the stadium a lot more income.  It would also cause less traffic throughout the stadium which could also lead to less fights.  As of now, I cannot find any research on whether or not this need is being attempted to be fixed.  If I were to say, I am almost 75% sure that no stadiums have this idea.  I say 75% because I have researched and saw that some stadiums tried using apps that did not work out.

#1: Sports fan in their early twenties.

  • Have you ever had to get up in the middle of a sporting event to get food or a drink?
    • Yes, I got up so that the lines were not as long as they would if I would have gone after a quarter or half.
  • Would you have rather gotten up while the game was still going on or in-between quarters and halves?
    • If the traffic wasn't so bad, in-between quarters or halves, but the traffic really gets that bad.
  • Does it upset you having to get up in the middle of the event?
    • Yes, because I sometimes miss key parts of the event that I can't get back.
  • How satisfied would you be if you could purchase the food and beverages you wanted and have them brought to you while sitting in your seat?
    • Very satisfied.
  • Would you ever consider purchasing tickets during an event?
    • Yes, if my team is making a playoff push where it is difficult to get tickets, I would like to buy them as soon as possible if I had the chance.
Reflection: The prototypical customers seem like being able to get their food and beverages brought to them without worrying about having to pay would enjoy it.  The ticket purchases may have difficulty selling down the line because it would depend on what kind of fan the customer is or what type of events are coming up.

#2: Sports fan in their late forties.
  • Have you ever had to get up in the middle of a sporting event to get food or a drink?
    • No, I typically wait till there is a stoppage of play.  Usually at the end of a quarter or half.
  • Would you have rather gotten up while the game was still going on or in-between quarters and halves?
    • I would have rather gotten up at the end of quarters or halves because I do not enjoy missing parts of the games.  Worst comes to worst, I'll miss the opening kick off or a small play.
  • Does it upset you if you get up in the middle of the event or miss a play?
    • If I miss a play than yes I would be upset no matter how small of the play is.
  • How satisfied would you be if you could purchase the food and beverages you wanted and have them brought to you while sitting in your seat?
    • I would be very satisfied.  I also do believe that I would order food and beverages more often.
  • While getting up at the end of a quarter or half, how long typically are the lines?
    • The lines are typically longer but I do not mind because I usually will go with a friend and wait with them being able to have a conversation to kill the time.
  • Would you ever consider purchasing tickets during an event?
    • I would consider it but I do not think I would typically do it because I would like to think about it on my own time not in the moment.
Reflection: This prototypical customer would find this tactic very useful because there are not many things to complain about it as long as everything goes over well.  Talking to an older fan made me realize they may not want to purchase tickets on the spot which makes sense because an older fan typically does not think like that.

#3: Girl in twenties who goes to concerts and sporting events occasionally.
  • Have you ever had to get up in the middle of a sporting event or concert to get food or something to drink?
    • The very few times I've gone to a sporting event yes, but I have not paid attention to it as much during a concert.  I typically do not look for that especially depending on the concert.
  • Does it upset you if you get up in the middle of the event and miss part of the concert or the play?
    • I do not care if there is a pre-performance going on during a concert and I have to use the bathroom, but during a sporting event I also do not care when I got up.
  • How satisfied would you be if you could purchase the food and beverages you wanted and have them brought to you while sitting in your seat?
    • I think it would be useful and cool during a sporting event but I would never think to use it during a concert.
  • Would you ever consider purchasing tickets during an event?
    • No, I would not because I usually do not buy tickets unless I really want to go.  If I am going to a sporting event, it would have to be a planned thing for me to go.
Reflection: This prototypical customer would find this not as useful as someone who is more into sporting events.  This is understandable depending on the type of fan that is purchasing tickets and what the occasion is for.

Summary: I truly do think that this opportunity is there if stadiums take the time to see how many fans would benefit from it.  In my personal opinion and based on myself, I really do think me and my friends would enjoy this a lot and think that the stadiums and franchises would be able to make a lot more money off of it.  I think it would also be able to help the workers bringing the food over earn tips and some extra money.  From when I originally started this belief, I still think that the opportunity is still there even when you consider the one girl that came off not really into it.  When interviewing her, it made me think of how it would not be as effective in a concert setting.  If they were to buy them for the sporting events, I do not think it would hurt to have them there for during concerts.  I think entrepreneurs should really take customer feedback into consideration while creating something because at the end of the day, the customers are the people who will be giving the entrepreneurs the money off of their ideas.  Without the customers, there is really no point for ideas to continuously being brought into reality.

I had several challenges while I was thinking of all of the ideas of what "bugs" me.  I think one of the most interesting parts of this assignment is typically, when we look at something bugging us, we let it fly over our shoulder and do not look at why it really bugs us or how it can be fixed.  Essentially, when we realize something bugs us, if we cannot figure out the answer to change that right off the bat, we do not take the time to figure it out.  Twenty different topics that bug me personally was very hard to think of.  When I first read over the assignment, I thought it was going to be very easy to come up with but I was wrong.  As stated, when something bugs me, I just let it fly over my shoulder and not worry about it and do not think of it again.  That was my biggest problem because I could not think of what truly bothered me in the past.

3A- Your Entrepreneurship Story

One time where I have been exposed to entrepreneurship is when one of my friends had begun a sticker and clothing company.  I had never thought of creating my own brand until he shared the idea with me.  He started a social media page on instagram called flatwater_fishing.  The company is based out of Jacksonville, Florida.  He began uploading pictures of other people's catches of fish.  He had started several trends which led to him getting more followers.  Once he had reached a high number of followers, he decided to open up a shop online where you can buy gear with the customized logo and phrases on them.  Since the day he had done this, I have always considered starting my own brand but never took the time to see what I would want to do.  While he was sharing his experience with me, he also stated how his friend started up a company previously.  Since his friend never copyrighted his company, the company he was ordering his merchandise from wound up taking his idea and putting it on amazon and making money off of it.  This experience that he had shared with me made me realize how much detail must go into creating your own brand.  One of the main reasons I took this course was to learn more about entrepreneurship and see all the aspects of it before investing myself and making sure I do it the right way.  In my opinion, it would be a big mistake investing time and money into something just to get it started up at a faster pace.  Taking this course will walk me through at a slow pace how to go about it.  I am very excited to continue to learn to benefit myself for the future!
